Upgrading or moving to Exchange 2010 – Where do I start?

by Nicolas Blank 12 November 2009 Exchange

Upgrading to Exchange 2010 from Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007 or both in a mixed org is a huge topic. You can start by reading TechNet and working your way through the various upgrade scenarios OR you could navigate to the newly released Exchange Server 2010 Deployment Assistant.

The Exchange Server 2010 Deployment Assistant is working for the 2003 upgrade scenario only at this stage, but already it’s quite amazing – why do I say that? Once you’ve answered the questions you are presented with a HUGE amount of usable information, with “how do I do this?” and “How do I know this worked” sections in the documentation.

The wizard moves from pre-requisite checks through to specific configuration on deploying not only specific roles, but specific configuration items like how to make you CAS internet facing, though to moving public folder data from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 are specified in enough detail to get a rolling start on not only planning but the specifics on how to do the actual installation and migration over to the newest version of Exchange.

It would be nice to see some more configuration specific questions like “Are you planning to use High Availability features in Exchange 2010” which would lead to DAG configuration items, etc, etc. But that wish list could grow massively and keep someone busy for the lifetime of the product…..

In my estimation this is a fantastic tool!

Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator

by Nicolas Blank 11 November 2009 Documentation

The Exchange Storage calculator is out. Ross Smith IV has done a supper job on updating the storage calculator and releasing it.

Why do you need it? Sizing Exchange can be a bit of a black art. understanding your users, how they’re using mail, understanding the disk I/O parameters of the disks in your SAN or direct attached disks all add up to spending a fair amount of time working out how to size the mailbox role required for the version of Exchange you’re using.

The Role Requirements calculators for Exchange are updated regularly as the team takes feedback and adjusts the calculator accordingly, so check back every time you need to calculate the role requirement for a new server.

The blog post describing the new release of the calculator is here:

OCS Updates just got better

by Nicolas Blank 10 November 2009 News

I don’t know about you, but I find updating OCS and keeping it updated a pain. Tons of patches for lots of components and it seems to be rather never ending once you start, often without really knowing what you need which patch for… or so it seems ;)

The sustained engineering team have now released a much better approach to patching:

The Updates Resource Center for Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Clients

Patches are now listed by servers, clients and device-based clients, which is LOADS better than it used to be. One step closer to easier deployment and operations! Go OCS guys and girls!
